The story opens in Belgrade during the German invasion. Black marketeers and communist patriots Marko and Blacky are living a hedonistic life. They take a group of friends, family, and partisans into a cellar beneath Marko's house to hide from the Nazis. This cellar is converted into a clandestine weapons factory. Above ground, Marko becomes a celebrated war hero, while Blacky is trapped below. To add fuel to the fire, both men are in love with the beautiful, enigmatic actress Natalija (Mirjana Joković). The plot thickens when the two friends fall in love with the same woman, Natalija (Mirjana Jokovic), an opera singer who becomes entangled in their rivalry. Here is the twist that defines the film: even after the war ends, Marko continues to lie to those in the cellar, forcing them to manufacture weapons indefinitely while he profits on the surface. Eventually, the "underground" society breaks out, only to discover a world that has radically changed—leading to a carnivalesque, absurdist conclusion that blurs the line between fantasy and harsh reality.
