The film tells the story of Allan (played by a young Hugh Grant, just a year before his breakout role in Maurice ), a British engineer working in 1930s Calcutta. He is invited to stay with the family of his Indian boss, Narendra Sen, played by the legendary Indian actor Soumitra Chatterjee. The Sen household includes his wife, Indira (Shabana Azmi), and their beautiful, headstrong daughter, Gayatri (Supriya Pathak).
